Nestled between shell limestone and sandstone slopes in Thuringia lies the city of Jena.
Mostly for hikers and mountaineers, but also for walkers, this city has plenty of activities ready.
Leisure activities in Jena
Here you have the choice between 17 mountains such as the mountain Devil’s Crib, the House Mountain or the Castle Mountain and you can choose a new challenge every day.
Particularly the geological phenomena such as the Student Slide and the Devil’s Holes attract numerous leisure activists every year. The unique nature of the mixed forests and the unique view from the peaks are an incentive for the sometimes strenuous climb.
Whoever is looking for peace and relaxation will certainly find it here and can recharge their batteries for everyday life. The castle ruins of the Lodeburg, which is composed of three ruins (upper, middle and lower ruin) tell a 1,000-year history and invite you to visit and explore.
Sights in Jena
The “Seven Wonders of Jena” have been a great attraction for 300 years. So they were at that time altar, head, dragon, the Jenzig mountain, the Camsdorfer bridge, the Fuchsturm and the Weigelsche house. Today, unfortunately, you can only visit five of them, as the bridge and Weigel’s house no longer exist.
Many of Jena’s historic buildings were destroyed during World War II, so Jena presents a fairly modern and industrial look, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from exploring the city.
The most prominent building and at the same time landmark of the city is the JenTower, which watches over Jena with its 133 meters of height and can be seen from far away.
As a means of transport, a hire car is recommended, which opens up the possibilities of also making a worthwhile excursion in the surrounding cities of Gera, Halle (Saale) or Chemnitz.
